Stress Isn’t the Problem – It’s How Students Deal With It
Stress is part of everyday school life – but whether it blocks or boosts performance depends largely on how we think about it. Research shows that the right mindset can turn stress into a source of motivation and success.
Stress isn’t the problem – it’s how we deal with it.
What a landmark study on mindset reveals – and why it shapes our tutoring approach.
Many students experience learning as stressful – especially when faced with difficult tasks, high expectations, or upcoming exams. But what if it’s not the stress itself that’s harmful, but the way students think about it?
That’s exactly what a widely discussed 2022 study by Yeager et al., published in Nature, demonstrates. The researchers explored how to help adolescents deal more effectively with academic stress – not by reducing pressure, but by changing their perspective.
Two Mindsets That Change Everything
The intervention combined two key psychological concepts:
- Growth Mindset – The belief that abilities can improve with effort and practice.
- Stress-is-Enhancing Mindset – The belief that stress isn’t a weakness but a natural response that can boost energy and performance.
Through short online modules, students were introduced to these ideas using personal stories, reflection prompts (e.g., “What would you say to a younger student who’s nervous before a test?”), and a “saying-is-believing” exercise in which they rephrased the core messages in their own words.
The goal: To help students see stress not as a threat, but as a sign that something matters – and an opportunity to grow.
The Results Were Striking – and Long-Lasting
Students who completed the intervention reported greater confidence in test situations. They also showed reduced levels of cortisol – a key stress hormone – and improved academic performance, particularly in subjects like math and science.
Even more importantly, the effects lasted: Months later – even during the pandemic and school closures – the same students showed higher resilience and a more positive perception of academic challenges.
These findings confirm what we see every day at Upside Education: Academic progress depends not only on subject knowledge, but on how students experience challenge. Those who believe they can grow from setbacks approach them with more courage, persistence, and self-belief.
This is especially powerful in tutoring, where students often deal with subjects they see as “problem areas.” A mindset shift can make all the difference. Reframing test anxiety as a growth opportunity opens up new pathways – and builds a lasting foundation for academic and personal success.
What This Means for Our Tutoring:
We make mindsets visible – and work on them intentionally.
At Upside Education, we focus not only on subject knowledge, but also on learning strategies, motivation, and confidence. Many students assume stress is a weakness or that poor results mean they’re not smart. We help them rethink those beliefs – because when stress and mistakes are seen as part of learning, they become powerful tools.
We treat stress as a learning opportunity – not a barrier.
Test anxiety and nervousness aren’t taboo in our sessions – they’re part of the process. We help students understand and manage these emotions, using reflection, visualization, or short mental exercises before exams or presentations.
We build self-efficacy through individual feedback.
The study showed particularly strong effects for students with low confidence. That’s why we emphasize individual progress over comparison. Our teachers highlight growth through structured feedback, clear goals, and progress reports. From chaos to clarity.
We foster long-term resilience.
What we teach goes far beyond a single session. Research shows: Students who know how to handle stress and believe in their growth remain motivated and capable – even during crises, school changes, or personal setbacks.
Conclusion
The way we handle stress and challenges can be learned – and it makes a real difference in motivation, performance, and well-being. At Upside Education, we intentionally integrate these scientific insights into our tutoring approach.
Because great tutoring isn’t just about knowledge – it’s about empowering young people to grow through challenges.
