Why Essay Writing Is Systematically Neglected \u2013 and Why That\u2019s a Problem<\/h4>\n

Many students in Grade 6 of primary school and Grade 2 of lower secondary school whom we support as part of our Gymi preparation have had little to no experience writing longer texts during their primary school years. In some cases, they have written only a single essay \u2013 in others, none at all.<\/p>\n

This observation is not an isolated case, but rather the result of a structural issue: writing longer texts is systematically neglected in everyday school life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The main reason is obvious. Correcting and evaluating essays is extremely time-consuming for teachers. At the same time, assessing written texts inevitably involves a degree of subjectivity \u2013 which can lead to discussions, dissatisfaction among parents, and in extreme cases even legal disputes.
\nUnder these conditions, it is understandable that essay writing often takes a back seat in daily school routines.<\/p>\n

Understandable \u2013 but problematic.<\/p>\n

Why This Development Is Critical<\/h4>\n

Despite \u2013 or perhaps precisely because of \u2013 the increasing availability of AI-supported language tools, writing remains a key academic skill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Students who learn to structure their thoughts, adapt content to an audience, and present arguments clearly not only communicate more effectively \u2013 they also think more clearly. These abilities are essential for discussions, presentations, negotiations, and for working confidently with AI-generated texts.<\/p>\n

The issue is not primarily about error-free writing. It is about the ability to organise ideas, set priorities, and create meaning<\/strong> \u2013 both in writing and in spoken language.<\/p>\n

Relevance for the Gymnasium Entrance Exam and Further Schooling<\/h4>\n

This gap becomes particularly critical in the context of the Gymi-Aufnahmepr\u00fcfung<\/a>: The essay represents a significant portion of the overall assessment<\/strong> and plays a decisive role for students aiming to enter Gymnasium.<\/p>\n

Later, throughout secondary school, students are expected to write and submit longer texts regularly \u2013 culminating in the final high school examinations. Anyone who has not learned to plan, structure, and revise texts systematically by this stage starts with a clear disadvantage.<\/p>\n

What Often Happens in Practice<\/h4>\n

Due to a lack of practice and methodological guidance, many students begin writing without a plan \u2013 hoping that \u201csomething good will come to them while writing.\u201d<\/p>\n
